I am currently in the middle of a running joke on Twitter which started off fun, but it's one that I've gotten flat out annoyed with at this point. I've taken to posting every exotic drop I've gotten in Destiny 2 since Forsaken launched, and with the exception of a miracle Ursa Furiosa in week 1, probably probably 30-50 hours a week since, I have gotten exactly like other Forsaken exotics, other than quest ones or Spider bounty-grinding for Lord of Wolves. There are 18 exotic weapons and armor pieces to collect in Forsaken, this is … .maddening, to say the least.
I have heard stories worse than my own, even, players hitting 600 power without a single Forsaken drop. Players getting 4 Ace of Spades in a row after completing the quest as wild drops. And so on. It has to stop, and this is easily the worst thing about Forsaken, which has otherwise revitalized destiny in a bunch of other ways.
Moving slow as molasses, a fix is supposedly coming on October 30 from Bungie which will weigh Forsaken exotics more heavily in exotics drops. While doing this, I am skeptical about this for a few reasons:
- Why do not we have 80 pieces of non-Forsaken exotic gear that will be duplicates for most players?
- I'm not sure I have faith in Bungie, which is exactly where we are supposed to get duplicate protection already (where you can not get enough of the same drops in a row).
- If we're weighting Forsaken exotics more heavily, is that going to stupidly continue to include quest exotics like Ace of Spades and Chaperone and Forsaken dupes like the second Lord of Wolves I just got?
In short, I am already calling for Bungie full exotic dupe protection. As in, every exotic drop you get in the wild Then do duplicates start repeating. What does this do?
- It allows you to have fun, because you know it's something you do not have.
- It does not mean that every day will be exotic too fast lot of gameplay time (I probably have not seen 18 total exotic drops in 150-200 hours of play since Forsaken's launch)
- It does not mean that there is no skill associated with an exotic collection, as these are only wild exotics, meaning that they will still be able to go to the heart of the world, but they will not be able to do so much.
- Even with dupe protection, there is still something to be done in the form of exotic catalysts, which Forsaken exotics (and many year one exotics) still do not have. I would also like to see exotic armor catalysts as well. These should be what we are doing for a long time.
Some of this calculus changes if Xur still decides to start selling useful exotics again. I will admit that things got too much in the year when you were selling exotics, you were in the process of doing that. In that scenario, there may be too many exotics too quickly, but if they are, they are going to be full, I think it is going to be the way to go.
At this point, I'm not going to be excited when a Forsaken exotic drops. I mean, I will, but it will mostly be a sense of "it's about damn time," "I feel like the game I've put in. The current system is bad, and I do not have faith in the future "fix" will be a cure-all. But I suppose we'll have to wait and see.
