Have we seen these concepts go somewhere? No, and as a new one has just been announced, I really can not be too enthusiastic about it because chances are good that it does not happen.
This lukewarm approach to the scrap of the brand is also not a new revelation. This begs the question of what Infiniti actually does, in addition to making beautiful SUVs, sedans and coupes that can not decide whether they want to be sports cars, high-tech cars or luxury cars , and often miss being all three.
Infiniti was a product of Japan's auto bubble era, which also spawned Lexus and Acura. But unlike Toyota, it seems that Nissan did not really know what to do with his arm of luxury. Carlos Ghosn's leadership is excellent in reducing costs, but that does not make it possible to properly run a luxury brand.
The uncertainty of the brand is not new and even the bosses have taken note. In 2013, we learned that Nissan had almost canceled Infiniti. This kind of atmosphere has really not been raised, especially when you consider the stagnant Nissan line (the 370Z and the GT-R are great but old, man) and that Infiniti just made badge engineering with the new QX30 instead of creating a new car.
The last years of Infiniti have given some brilliant points, like this very cool and advanced variable compression rationing engine, but as the brand said that the electric or hybrid engine is about 2021, I do not see how this engine has a lot of a future there.
And while we love the 400 horsepower Q50 and Q60, we can not really call them class leaders. You need products that can stand on both feet, something that Cadillac is learning the hard way, and Infiniti does not really care.
It can not even pretend to occupy the bang-for-your-buck niche, because if you want an affordable but quite excellent sports sedan, you buy a Genesis G70, which can be optional with a manual. It looks like Genesis is about to eat Infiniti's lunch, despite being 25 years ahead of time.
Deep down, I have the impression that Nissan is never making as much effort with Infiniti as Toyota with Lexus, whether through funding or a strategy project. Lexus cars have dedicated chassis and bodies. Infinitis has gotten a job rebadge, whether from Nissans cars or JDM plebeians, until recently.
Which makes it even more frustrating to see these incredible concepts. Knowing that Infiniti is currently happy to make cars that give you less opinion that if you were to browse a Gap Fall catalog, it's hard to be really excited for them. To accumulate enthusiasm and credibility? Build a damn thing.
I do not pretend to know what's going on in board meetings, where leaders discuss future brand plans. Electrification is more than likely the next step for Infiniti, which one could say of all car manufacturers. Maybe it'll create something cool there. Maybe the electric car that she will market will look like that of Q Inspiration Concept. At least, they say they have a dedicated platform.
But if the brand does not come out anymore and no less, then what is the interest of Infiniti?
