Facebook and Instagram fight against a major breakdown

Update: November 20, 2018, at 7 pm ET: "Earlier in the day, a server configuration caused intermittent problems in all applications around the world, creating a degraded experience for users," said Facebook in a statement. "The problem has been solved since then, we have returned 100% for everyone and we are sorry for any inconvenience."

Facebook is currently down for many users.

Users in the US and Europe have started reporting that Facebook has been inaccessible for at least 8:15 am ET.

Facebook has confirmed the breakdown on its developer site. "We are studying the problem and working on a resolution," wrote a Facebook spokesperson in a message posted on the site.

#FacebookDown is currently the main topic of news on Twitter, as users flock to the site to report the breakdown of Facebook.

Users also report that Instagram is also down. #InstagramDown is also trend on Twitter.

Most users who experience the Facebook crash report an error message saying "Sorry, an error has occurred, we are working on it and will fix it as soon as possible".

"We are aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook application family, and we are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible," a Facebook spokesman told Mashable in a statement.

According to DownDetector, while the vast majority of users affected by the blackout located in the states and Europe, users in South America and Asia are also experiencing downtime.
