Facebook sues BlackBerry for patent infringement of voicemail technology – TechCrunch

Facebook accused BlackBerry of stealing its voicemail technology in its instant messaging application.

In a 118-page lawsuit filed in San Francisco on Tuesday, Facebook claimed BlackBerry encroached on five other patents, including tracking and analyzing GPS data, voicemail technology, and how the application displays graphics, video, and audio.

In the complaint, Facebook claims that the violations "caused and will continue to cause damage" to the company's Messenger and WhatsApp messaging applications.

Facebook has not yet put a figure on the possible damage, but the tone of the trial itself rings hollow in retrospective comments made by Facebook at the reception of its own trial for such accusations.

If this case sounds familiar, it's because BlackBerry itself filed a similar complaint against Facebook in March.

Paul Grewal, Facebook's deputy legal advisor, said at the time that "the BlackBerry suit unfortunately reflects the current state of its messaging business."

Neither Facebook nor BlackBerry immediately responded to a request for comment.
