Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will be remastered for PS4

Square Enix today announced the release of a remastered version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for PlayStation 4, via Kotaku. It will be released in Japan in 2019. We have not heard from the United States yet.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was released on GameCube in 2003. It was a big problem at the time to be the first Final Fantasy game to be released on a Nintendo console since the days of Super Nintendo. But Crystal Chronicles is an unorthodox Final Fantasy experience. It focuses on cooperative action with four players. It also has players using Game Boy Advances as controllers, requiring the use of link cables.

The experience was innovative but cumbersome. A remastered version that eliminates link cables and adds the convenience of online multiplayer could improve the game.

Crystal Chronicles has become its own subseries in the Final Fantasy Universe. But the latest entry, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers for the Wii, was released in 2009. The series has been dormant, but this remaster of the original brings it back to life.
