Last night, Nintendo and Square Enix were delighted Final Fantasy fans by announcing a whole bunch of new Switch ports. There is Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X / X-2, Final Fantasy XII, and even the adorable pocket edition of Final Fantasy XV. But where is Final Fantasy VIII?
It's not clear why the adventures of Squall and Rinoa did not make a difference, but for some reason Square Enix left FFVIII on all his recent reissues, which are now available for Switch and Xbox One. On PS4, you can purchase PlayStation versions of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX, as well as the HD remakes of X and XIIbut you can not get VIII. Similarly, both FFVII and FFIX are out for smartphones, but there is no FFVIII in sight.
FFVIII is available on PS3 and PSP, and you can capture the old PC version on Steam, but as a port of its games on new platforms, Final Fantasy VIII was ignored. We do not know why.
It does not really make sense. (I asked Square why she was jumping FFVIIIbut has not yet been answered.) It's not like Final Fantasy VIII is a piece of nasty history that the company should claim never to have happened, as Final Fantasy IV: The years after. The linchpin of realism and science fiction would have been back in 1999, but today, this seems to be part of a series of eclectic role-playing games that deserve to be preserved.
