Ford Ranger 201's towing capacity, payload and torque reach record highs

The 2019 Ford Ranger will not appear at US dealerships until early next year, but Ford hopes to whet the appetite of pickup fans with the truck's payload, torque and towing capacity. The new numbers come as the 2019 Ranger prepares to go into production, which will begin later this year at Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan.

We already knew that Ford would equip the truck with a single-engine option, at least initially. It's the 2.3-liter EcoBoost, a four-cylinder that the automaker has always promised would be able to cope with V6 engines with competing vans. We now understand this trust.

The 270 horses were already known, but Ford confirms today that the 2019 Ranger will have 310 lb-ft of torque. According to the company, this is the largest pair of all gasoline engines in the mid-size van segment. This will work with the standard 10-speed Ranger transmission.

For maximum payload capacity, the 2019 Ranger will support 1,860 pounds. Once again, Ford presents this figure as the largest share of the truck segment. Ford will have SuperCab and SuperCrew cab configurations, but only one wheelbase.

Finally, there is towing. There, the 2019 Ranger has a maximum capacity of 7,500 pounds, assuming you have the towing device – and its integrated tow hitch – and a trailer brake controller. Once again, Ford says this truck is bigger than any other gasoline truck in its class.

Ford will have two Ranger 2WD and 4WD models, each with Dana Trac-Lok differentials. The Ranger 4RM will have 2 high, 4 high and 4 low as standard. An electronic locking rear differential will be standard on the FX2 and FX4 trolleys, and optional on other models.

Although the gross numbers are important, the technical talents that add to the towing and transport capacity of pick-ups are just as vital. There is the Trail Control, for example, which is actually a cruise control but intended for off-road use. This supports acceleration and braking for each wheel, letting the driver focus solely on the steering.

Smart Trailer Tow, meanwhile, uses a special connector that can warn via the display of the SYNC3 dashboard if the trailer has been connected incorrectly. Blind spot monitoring will keep an eye not only around the Ranger, but also on vehicles in nearby lanes near your trailer. Finally, Ford's terrain management system, which operates normally; grass, gravel and snow; mud and ruts; and modes of driving sand.
