IFord's next 100% electric performance crossover may not be a Mach 1 insignia, like this latest skit. If you're like us, you probably thought you were looking at a rear end of the Mustang, but this is actually our first glimpse of the electric crossover that has not been named yet.
The three-piece vertical taillight clusters are the first sign of Mustang's past and present, but even the shape of the body is similar to that of the current generation pony car. We can see hips and flared wings of the same size, and even the shape of the back fascia is very sketched. A hint that this is the crossover model could be found in the roof, which seems taller and less raked compared to the current Mustang. The corners of the roof and rear pillars also look more rounded, reminiscent of Fastback SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, the BMW X6 and many more.
But great sports gifts are not visible in this sketch. As you might expect from a Mustang inspired crossover, the vehicle should have a much higher ride height than the Mustang. Even so, imagining this body with a raised suspension leaves us a Mustang on stilts for a mental image. But project manager Darren Palmer, who also heads the next generation of Mustang, believes the end product will be much more than that.
"It's exciting to know that my flagship development of the next generation of Mustang is closing the loop as we prepare to launch our Mustang-inspired utility vehicle," said Palmer in a recent post. "For my part, I can not wait to get one, side by side, with my Shelby GT350R."
The Mustang-inspired crossover arrives in 2020, and Ford plans an all-electric 300-mile range. As we reported earlier, Ford is reconsidering the original Mach 1 name because of the negative comments from Mustang fans.
