If you're playing Fortnite On the Nintendo Switch, you've noticed the sudden. With the v5.40.2 update, developer Epic has decided to patch out the ability to capture and share 30-second video clips in an effort to improve overall game performance.
While the Switch version of Fortnite is mostly feature-complete, it lacks the ability to view replays, making the removal of the ability to record 30-second highlights disappointing for many. It has not been determined what kind of performance impact it had other than crashes, or how well the omission of the feature improves performance.
Kotaku is reporting that Sean Hamilton, one of Fortnite's community managers, has confirmed the disappearance alongside an explanation:
"You may have noticed the video capture feature on Nintendo Switch as of the v5.40.2 client update." This was done for performance and stability reasons we have been seeing a high rate of out of memory related crashes. This feature saves a significant amount of RAM while also having a positive effect on overall performance across the board. "
Given the enormous popularity of Fortnite and the enthusiasm most players have for sharing (especially that coveted Battle Royale victory) to social media, Epic is probably bracing for impact to receive loud complaints from upset players.
However, Hamilton tells Kotaku that Epic will consider adding video capture back into Fortnite for Switch as an optional feature that can be used on and off. I'm sure players who never noticed performance issues will appreciate that yew it comes to fruition.
Did you experience any crashes with Fortnite? Have you noticed any performance improvements since this feature was removed? Talk to me on Twitter and let me know.
