Fortnite's $ 1 Million Winter Royale Tournament Begins this Weekend

Epic has put a $ 1 million prize pool on the table for the Fortnite Winter Royale tournament, "a test event that will emulate the World Cup qualifying process," which should begin later this month. The Open qualifiers will take place on the weekend of November 24 and 25, followed by the European finals from November 30 to December 1 and the North American finals from December 11 to 12.

"Several chances" of winning a high score will be offered during the qualifying period, said Epic in the announcement, with the top eligible players invited to take part in the finals of their region. The Winter Royale is limited to North America and Europe, but Epic said other regional tournaments would be held in other regions "in the near future".

The Winter Royale will use the same rules as the currently available "Pop-Up Cup", a newly added feature that allows online tournaments built around different game settings, which will appear in the Events tab.

"Think of it as competitive MTL where we can test great adjustments in a more competitive environment," said Epic. "We plan to browse and explore different game adjustments by closely watching the competitive game in these pop-Ups."

Epic has also announced patches and changes to the recently launched in-game tournament system, including a system that prevents players' point totals from affecting the organization of games, an obvious problem when trying to stay competitive. The fix means that the more you progress in a tournament, the more difficult your games will be, which is how it should be; the bad news is that longer wait times are likely to result as well.

"Please note that players with a lot of points will have to wait more than 5 minutes to find an appropriate match," said Epic. "We will continue to explore the best solution for the competition by tailoring the matchmaking process over time, as needed."

The Winter Royale event calendar and a list of other online tournaments will be available via the Events tab.
