When Nvidia originally announced the GeForce RTX lineup, we had to ask ourselves if there would be a RTX 2060 or if Nvidia would keep the GTX mark on the lower level components. After all, ray tracing, as we saw in Battlefield 5, is very demanding. Cutting RT cores in half to go from 2080 Ti to 2070 makes the game even with questionable 1080p ray tracing, and it's obvious that RTX 2060 will have even fewer cores. But, based on early leaks performance using the reference Final Fantasy XV (it's Tom's hardware), it seems that the RTX 2060 does arrive.
The good news is that the performance seems to be a decent improvement over the GTX 1060 6GB, at least based on the FFXV test. At 4k in height, the RTX 2060 gets a score of 2589, which seems to be without DLSS (since the higher presets do not activate DLSS AFAICT). In comparison, the GTX 1060 gets 1985, the GTX 1070, 2749, and RTX 2070, 3927. So, in this one test, we are considering a potential 30% increase in performance over the previous generation.
The Final Fantasy XV benchmark is generally consistent with my performance results. A 1080 GTX gets a score of 3401, which means that a 2070 is 15% faster than 1080. In terms of actual gaming performance, I show an average performance advantage of 12% for the 2070, which which seems reasonable. The RTX 2080 Ti compared to the GTX 1080 Ti shows a performance advantage of 35% in the FFXV benchmark, at least 4k, and an overall lead of 33% after 12 tests.
A likely explanation for this performance is that the RTX 2060 will use a lighter variant of the TU106 architecture. Disable one of the GDDR6 controllers and 12 SMs and you will get a central part of 1,536 CUDA that should work roughly at the point where we observe the 2060 horizon. You would also barely 24 RT cores and 192 Tensor cores, which is very interesting for ray tracing or DLSS. Or Nvidia could have a separate TU107 chip to occupy this niche.
What we do not know, is how much Nvidia will charge for the RTX 2060 or when it will come out. Given the recent launch of the Radeon RX 590, which is 12% higher than the GTX 1060 6GB, Nvidia will most likely want to recover the medium crown. To do this, a price of $ 300 or less will do the job, and based on other RTX cards, I think that's all we can hope for. Regarding the launch date, we first found leaks of the RX 590 – also in the FFXV performance tests – about a month before the official launch of the card. This would place the RTX 2060 on the launch pad for a while in December, but do not be surprised if it is pushed in January.
