Google is trying to improve its relationship with photographic rights holders by providing additional contextual data for its image search. In a blog post published today, product manager Ashutosh Agarwal highlighted the company's plan to combine Creator and Credit metadata with images disseminated through research.
The company notes that finding who created a given image – and who owns the rights – has always been difficult online. Google Images was not particularly helpful, forcing users to search for this information themselves.
The information will begin to appear on the images today, when they are available, and in the coming weeks, Google will add a copyright notice. Users can find all of this by clicking on the "Credits" link on a given map.
Google's partnership with CEPIC (Center for the Image Industry) and IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) to create best attribution practices. The company has been reticent about the images recently. In February, Google dropped the View Images link as part of an agreement with Getty.
