It's not broken, but Google is repairing it. As announced last month, Google is redesigning the Google Feed brand, its landing page for Android and the Google app, called Google Discover. By throwing minimalism out of the window, Google Discover will replace the iconic Google.com homepage on mobile.
Discover is being rolled out on Google.com on iOS and Android devices. For Android users, Discover is already integrated into the interface, accessible by scanning from the Home screen. Anyone using the Google app on iOS or Android will also have access to Discover's homepage, which should be familiar at this point. We contacted Google for more details on who will see Discover When.
For a company that sometimes has trouble filtering misinformation into its search results, making Discover so important may not be a wise choice. In general, Discover's results resurface elements that are already of interest to a user, but these results come from a set of sources large enough to not always feel relevant. Let's hope that Google has enough conscious humans in its teams to avoid a future algorithmic catastrophe, even if we do not hold our breath for Google or a social platform of this type.
If you use Discover through the Google app, you can further customize your feed, adding topics to subscribe to, weather, trip information, and more. If you are a sports fan, the "teams" feature is really useful. If the vast collective knowledge of your Google preferences scares you (and it should) but you still like the Google app, you can turn off 'Web Activity and Apps' for a little more peace of mind following these instructions – just invert them.
