Seven Google employees have resigned, citing the company's lack of transparency after the internet giant revealed its efforts to return to China through a censored research project called "Dragonfly."
The company's employees shared the list of names on an e-mailing list devoted to discussing issues of ethics and transparency at Google.
"Three sources close to the record confirmed the existence of the list, consisting largely of software engineers whose experience with Google varies between one and eleven years," reported BuzzFeed News.
Among the names on the list, former Google senior scientist Jack Poulson, who worked for Google in Toronto before resigning last month.
About 1,000 employees signed an open letter asking the company to be transparent about the project and to create an ethical process that includes core employees and not just senior executives, according to one CNET report.
"The reported resignations illustrate a changing cultural environment at Google, where employees have been franker and have launched an ambitious strategy launched by the company's leadership," adds the CNET report.
It has been announced for a few days that Google Cloud's scientific director of artificial intelligence (AI) Fei-Fei Li will be replaced by Andrew Moore, Dean of Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science. .
Google's plan to launch a censored version of its search engine in China has been sharply criticized by a former head of the company's free expression in the Asia-Pacific region, who called it a "stupid gesture."
The search engine giant launched a search engine in China in 2006 but withdrew its service from the country in 2010, citing the Chinese government's efforts to limit freedom of expression and block websites.
