Google has announced a number of major updates for Search earlier this week. Today, an office redesign for Google Images is being rolled out, taking advantage of the Google Material theme, while image credits now appear in the results.
The new desktop design is inspired by a number of changes made earlier this year on mobiles. The images include more context with captions that indicate the title of the web page. The title and domain also appear on the main results page under each image.
According to Google, this is to help users find more information on the site and determine if that is the result they're looking for. Under the search bar, there is a carousel of related search terms in pill boxes that are part of the Material theme. Google notes that the larger screen should help to accomplish more complex tasks.
In the background, the Google Images algorithm has been revised over the past year to "rank the results with both great images and great content." The search gives priority to the authority of the web page and the physical location of the image on the page.
As of today, Google Images will also display information on rights-related images. When available, the Creator and Credit metadata will be available in the mobile overflow menu under "Image Credits". In the coming weeks, this pop-up will also indicate the details of the copyright notice.
It is traditionally difficult to know the creator of the images on the Web, as well as the rights holders. This information is often part of image metadata and is essential to protect copyright and license information related to images.
Google has worked with the consortium of the photo industry CEPIC and the global technical standardization body for IPTC information media.
In addition to today's updates, Google Images will begin to display AMP articles, both publishers and those generated by Google. Meanwhile, on mobile, Images adds a Google Lens button to analyze and find similar images.
