Google Maps now runs on Apple CarPlay with iOS update 12

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have revolutionized the interface of infotainment system embedded on modern cars. While Android Auto was clearly offering many options compatible with the car's infotainment unit from the start, Apple took its time to make CarPlay more accessible in terms of features. With the update of iOS 12, the technology giant has solved a major problem with Apple CarPlay by making Google Maps now accessible. With the update, users will no longer have to use Apple Maps for navigation.

While Apple's Maps has significantly improved since its launch, Google Maps has clearly the advantage of offering more accurate routes and locations in comparison. Google Maps uses Google's traffic and mapping data and also syncs with your saved places.

In addition to Google Maps, Apple CarPlay will soon be compatible with an increasingly popular third-party navigation app – Waze, which is also owned by Google, as well as Here cards. For those looking to use Google Maps with Apple CarPlay, iPhone users will need to upgrade their devices to iOS 12 and the Google Maps version to version 5.0 for the connection to work.

Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have proved very popular in India too, with a multitude of manufacturers now offering the same thing, not just on premium vehicles. The Suzuki Swift, Ignis, Baleno, Ciaz and S-Cross from Maruti are equipped with both systems, while the Honda City, Jazz, Hyundai Creta, Jeep Compass, BMW 5 Series and even Mercedes-Benz S- Classes are also offered. Mahindra has an exclusive Google link for Android Auto on its vehicles and does not yet offer Apple CarPlay on its cars.
