Owners of Google's latest smartphone, the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL, report a disabling problem with their cameras on the Google Pixel Community forum and on Reddit.
The reports began to appear late October, with some indicating that the problem arose when users were trying to use the camera in another application, such as a social media application or a banking application that allows you to take pictures of checks to deposit. Then, when they return to the main application of the camera on the Pixel 3, it displays a blank screen or a notification appears in the application, indicating that the camera has suffered a "fatal error".
This is problematic, especially for the Pixel 3, which has the best camera on any smartphone. Google Pixel phone cameras are one of the three main pillars that make these devices so desirable: run a "pure" version of Android and receive Android updates as soon as Google publishes them. Most Android phones do not have the best camera, the best version of an operating system, and only receive one-time updates in one package.
Pixel 3 users largely said that they had tried unsuccessfully to reboot their systems and reset them at the factory, but some said that restarting the phone was working to repair the camera.
The recent Android update of November does not seem to have solved the problem either. Some even think that this may have caused the problem.
Some users have been able to get replacement devices from Google, others not. For those who received replacement devices, the problem of the camera did not come back.
A member of the Pixel Community forum said that Google had refused to replace a device when he had cited the error code and that the problem would be "solved soon", which suggests that it is a software bug rather than hardware.
Community managers at Google's Pixel Community Forum acknowledged that Google was aware of the problem and some users reported that Google's support also acknowledged the problem and that a patch was under development. Business Insider asked for comments and tips from users who were affected by the problem, but did not get an immediate response.
