In such a late move that we might have thought it had happened several months ago, Google finally managed to provide free 4K updates of the SD and HD versions of its Google Play movies.
Starting today, when you next log in to your Google Play account through the Play Movies & TV app on your mobile device or compatible TV, you need to be informed about movies you own. who received the free 4K update.
This will not necessarily cover all the movies in your library, as the number of titles for which a 4K version is currently available is quite limited. But the number of titles supported by 4K will certainly increase over time, and the bottom line is that Google has now engaged in a free upgrade policy.
Apple launched the free upgrade to 4K movies by launching the Apple TV 4K last September. The only surprise that emerges from the Google Play news, is that Google has taken so long to catch up.
The Apple TV 4K also introduced the idea that 4K versions of movies should not cost more than their HD versions. This decision immediately made it difficult for competing platforms to try to charge a premium for 4K versions of movies, as before. It is not surprising to see Google lower prices for 4K titles on Google Play Movies today.
However, a quick overview of the British Play Movies & TV store still shows (sometimes significant) differences between the prices of the HD and 4K versions of the same movie. For example, Spider-Man: Homecoming costs only £ 6.99 in HD, but £ 14.99 in 4K. And Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle costs £ 13.99 in 4K, but £ 12.99 in HD. But Google is expected to start offering 4K movies at the same price as their HD counterparts. If this is already happening in the US store Google Play, let me know via the Twitter account associated with the end of this article.
It should be noted here that Google Play makes it easy to trace 4K titles to certain streaming platforms, thanks to the "Best 4K Movies" list that lists the 40 most popular 4K titles.
AV fans should also note, if they have not already done so, that Google Play now offers support for the high dynamic range of some titles (a feature that its rival, Apple, has recently shown with enthusiasm.
These HDR titles are not as easy to find as 4K titles; launching a search for HDR movies, for example, gives no results. However, of the 40 movies on Google's top 4K movie list at the time of writing, 29 in their "More Information" section say they are available in HDR.
