The high definition movies you bought on the Google Play Store will automatically upgrade to 4K for free, says Google, at least when 4K titles are available at participating Hollywood studios.

That means you'll be able to stream these movies in 4K, even if you originally bought them in HD or even SD. You can find out which movies have been upgraded by opening the Play Movies & TV app on your device.

Google also says that you will now pay less for most 4K movies, with new movies generally in the same price range as HD movies. You usually pay between $ 12.99 and $ 19.99 in the United States. These movies cost you about $ 30.

Of course, you'll need a device that supports 4K technology (plus sufficient bandwidth for streaming) to watch movies in 4K, lest titles be degraded to HD or SD quality.

Compatible devices include 4K Android TVs, such as the Sony Bravia, as well as many of Samsung's recent smart TVs. According to Google, models of LG TVs are in preparation.

Other compatible devices include Nvidia Shield and Google's own Chromecast Ulta if connected to a 4K TV.
