At Google, the company offers a "Grab and Go" program that allows employees to use self-serve stations to quickly borrow and return Chromebooks without having to go through a long computer approval process.
Chromebooks have found their place in the field of education, and a number of large companies are also embarking on the idea of a centrally managed device that focuses primarily on the browser. It may not be a surprise, as schools and businesses are looking for the same thing with these devices.
At Google, more than 30,000 users have already made more than 100,000 loans.
Although Google wants other programs to be similar (and use more Chromebooks), note that there is a limited preview program and that Google does not build and does not sell racks or other infrastructure. As a Google spokesperson has told us, Google will give companies that want the free source code to build this system and advise them during configuration and deployment. It will also work with partners to help them build the hardware or set up a Grab and Go system.
Employees who want to use one of these "grab and go" stations simply take a laptop, sign in and move on to their day. When they are done, they simply return the laptop. That's all. Easy
This is not as exciting as Google building and selling Chromebooks racks, but this project is clearly another way to bring Chromebooks to the company. Specifically, Google says that this program addresses to frontline workers who only need devices for a short period of time, as well as to posted workers and telecommuters.
