Half of devices now use iOS 12 – TechCrunch

Half of all devices now use the latest version of the iOS, iOS 12 mobile operating system, according to figures shared by Apple. Of the devices introduced in the last four years, this number has reached 53%. And the adoption of iOS 12 is faster than the latest version, notes Apple.

As we previously reported, it was not until November 6, 2017 that IsOS 11 reached 52% of current iPhone and iPad. iOS 12 achieved this goal in mid-October.

Apple's new figures, available here on its Apple developer website, also confirm a third-party report last week, which claimed to show a similar trend. According to Mixpanel's findings, about 47.6 percent of all iOS devices used iOS 12, while 45.6 percent used iOS 11. The remaining devices used an older version, he added.

Apple's data also confirms this, showing iOS 12 at 53% on all devices introduced since September 2014, followed by iOS 11 at 40%, and the remaining 7% running an earlier version of iOS.

Apple's numbers are as follows: iOS 12 at 50%, iOS 11 at 39%, 11% using an earlier version of iOS.

Adoption rates related to the new version of Android are very different in comparison. The latest version, Android Oreo (8.0 and 8.1), only runs on 19.2% of devices. Nougat, Marshmallow, Lollipop and KitKat also have large installation bases, with respectively 20.3%, 21.6%, 18.3% and 7.8%.

But Apple has an advantage when it comes to distributing its mobile operating system. While Google releases updates from its own Pixel, Nexus and Android One supported devices, Android updates are mostly managed by OEMs and operators.

The new iOS 12 adoption rate data follows another third-party report, that of CIRP, which claims that Apple is catching up with Android's third quarter loyalty rates and is posting rates of retention that reach an unprecedented level. IBPAR reports are based on survey data, but not direct measures like Mixpanel and Apple.
