Although the iPhone XR can support many features identical to those of the iPhone X and the iPhone XS, Portrait mode is an area in which it fails. The Portrait mode of the iPhone XR is limited to working on people, not on objects and animals like other iPhone models.
The developers behind the famous Halide camera app, however, said they found depth data on the iPhone XR and could turn on portrait mode for non-users.

With the original Camera app on iOS, if you are trying to take a picture of your pet or object in Portrait mode on an iPhone XR, a message saying "No people detected 'S poster. Switch on a person and everything works perfectly. This is apparently a software limitation, since Apple relies heavily on software to mimic the camera features of two-camera iPhones on the single-lensed iPhone XR .
In an article on Reddit, however, Halide's developers revealed that they currently use Portrait mode for pets via their app. They then explain that "with more tools," they will likely be able to release a version of the Halide app that activates Portrait Mode for iPhone XR on all sorts of topics.
There seems to be some pitfalls here, at least in the current form of functionality. The developers of Halide, for example, say that the Portrait mode of the iPhone XR seems to be "more capricious in some settings" than the iPhone XS. In addition, they note that the depth map on the iPhone XR is of a lower resolution than the dual-camera iPhone, but that it seems "usable".
And do you know that we have Portrait mode that works on pets! We think that with more tools, we will be able to send a version of our application that activates portrait mode for all sorts of things. It seems like it will be a little more "capricious"; in some cases it will not work if there is not enough variance in the relative distance of objects, but a can of sparkling water on my desk worked very well.
This means that third-party applications must be able to activate a Portrait mode of form for more people, which is exciting! Note that the resolution of the depth map is much lower than that of the dual camera configuration, but it seems usable.
Portrait mode, limited to many faces, is one of the biggest drawbacks of the iPhone XR camera for many people. Nevertheless, it seems that this could change through the Halide application, which is a $ 5.99 download on the App Store.
