First, the build quality is what you expect from Nokia; the aluminum frame and glass sandwich design give it a weight that you tend to find in devices that cost double. The chamfered edges are a bit sharp for my taste, but that does not mean it's uncomfortable to hold – far from it. Honestly, the quality of the construction has shocked me, just like a smartphone under $ 350.
It's not perfect, because the glass – both front and back – lifts fingerprints to a level I have not seen in a long time. It is particularly disappointing to see the Midnight Blue Gloss in person, as it is a very beautiful color that moves slightly away from the standard black that it looked into my hands.
The performance is excellent thanks to the Snapdragon 636 processor and the lightweight Android One preinstalled – which is currently the Oreo flavor – and which will be updated for Android Pie in the coming weeks. In general, the change of applications and the switch from one screen to another were smooth and smooth. I bet this device will suit a large proportion of smartphone users.
Although Nokia mentioned new features and technical features of the camera, including the updated Pro Mode, it was not exactly the best setting to get the most out of the camera Photo. Expect an update of the camera's performance once my full review will be published. I was not really impressed by the camera, but I was not disappointed with what it was worth.
I like adding the fingerprint reader, but I did not like the fingerprint reader itself. When it worked, it was fast, but I often missed the task or had trouble feeling it at the back of the unit. This is something that I will have to go into further in my comprehensive review.
The display was great, it's a 1080p panel that even allows you to play HDR videos on YouTube, which I do not think any other Android phone worth less than $ 400 can claim. I liked the quality of everything from the home screen to playing videos, even if the internet was bad and the videos were not playing fluently.
It would be rude not to mention the notch when you are talking about the display. The notch of the Nokia 7.1 is smaller than that of many competitors, including the OnePlus 6, which has one of the best notched screens. One thing I noticed was that when it went full screen, the video did not wrap the notch, but this part of the screen was blackened to hide it. Personally, I think it's a pretty interesting way to solve this problem – almost as if Nokia would prefer that there be no hack at all.
Another sensitive point was the storage on the test model I and some others were given. It had 14GB of pre-allocated 32GB of internal memory. If you choose this model, you must invest in a microSD card, which this device supports.
But overall, I was very impressed by the little time I had with the Nokia 7.1. It was a wise decision to use Android One. On a modest hardware, it is clear that a device works with heavy skin, but this brand new Nokia device is a superb example of fluid software on a modest hardware. I'm excited to see how it goes with more tests.
Launch Details
The Nokia 7.1 will be launched on the European markets of course, but also in the United States. In the US, the phone will only cost $ 349 and will be available for pre-order on Amazon, Best Buy and B & H Photo. Delivery begins October 28th.
With regard to Europe, the Nokia 7.1 will be available from October 22 at a price of 349 euros for the base model or 400 euros for the variant with 4 GB of RAM / 64 GB. Nokia also launches two pairs of wireless headphones with the 7.1, including a truly wireless option.
