I really enjoyed last year's Call of Duty: WWII, but one thing that drove me crazy about the game was the implementation of loot boxes.
For more information, click here to buy "Supply Drops", which contains various cosmetic items, from super blade pistol grip designs to really cool and varied uniforms for troops from myriad different countries.
The problem with loot boxes, of course, is that you do not know what you're going to get and the act of opening up a slot machine. It was a trend that started with Blizzard's Overwatch and fell out of favor around the time Star Wars: Battlefront II lancé.
That was also around the same time Call Of Duty: WWII, though that game managed to escape the controversy largely unscathed (despite having said Supply Drops land on Normandy Beach.)
This year, Activision and Treyarch are said to be loot boxes in favor of a season-based progression system that unlocks cosmetics simply by playing the game.
The Black Market, Contraband Stream & Blackjack's Shop
The Black Market is Black Ops 4's shop. But it's not just about real money.
Within the Black Market is the Contraband stream which "Google will enable you to get started with the game of operating the game by operating the game. .
Operations bring new gear to the game
- All-New Blackout Characters– New playable characters will be released with each new Operation.
- Signature Weapons
- Specialists Outfits – Cool customization content built around themes for all Specialists in-game; You can even mix and match the look of your character within outfit sets.
- Tags / Gestures – Whether you're taunting your opponents or celebrating a victory, you're in the game.
Alongside this seasonal Contraband stream, Treyarch will release limited time 'Special Events' with even more content limited-time cosmetic gear. For instance, starting tomorrow on PS4 Black Ops 4's Halloween event kicks off. During this event we will not be available after it's over.
The Contraband stream and Special Events are available to everyone for free; I'm not sure if there's a bonus to being a Black Ops Pass holder, but I'll try to find out and will update the post accordingly.
Players can also purchase cosmetic items directly from Blackjack's Shop, which goes live in November. Using Call of Duty Points RNG-based loot boxes. The shop will refresh weekly with different items.
While some might argue that any microtransactions are bad in a premium game, I think that for something like Call of Duty, where the items are cosmetic and you're getting new events, fashions, etc. it's not such a big deal. I do not wish that this operation would have gone entirely, in fact, instead of selling a DLC. I think that's a huge mistake in terms of maintaining a broad, basic cohesive player.
Still, this is a definite improvement over the years and loot boxes, and hopefully having a cool progression system.
I should also add that I think the timed PS4 exclusivity is still lame, but at least it's just one week now instead of an entire month. Ideally we'd like to get paid for the exclusive packs and console altogether bonuses, but at least this is all heading in the right direction.
I think it's more than just a copy of the royal battle mode, more developers and publishers should take a page from Fortnite's Treyarch and Activision are doing here. Earning customization options simply by playing a great idea, and it's a good idea PUBG, have done to their detriment.)
