Here's when Apple's MacBooks could separate from Intel

Apple is definitely considering moving away from Intel for MacBooks and other MacOS devices. But that will not happen anytime soon, according to a new report from longtime Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo.

Here's when Apple's MacBooks could abandon Intel

In a note addressed to investors this week, Kuo said that he thought that Apple would start using its own processor chips for Macs from 2020 or 2021, according to 9to5Mac, which got a copy of Note. The company's chip will be based on the ARM architecture and could dramatically improve the appeal of the Mac, according to Kuo.

He noted that Apple could offer custom chips that would work well with its software and could reduce Mac prices by controlling its own cost structure. In the end, though, he thinks that Apple will generate a huge profit on Macs when they run on their own chips.

A report released earlier this year indicated that Apple was actually working on building its own chips for Mac and stood out from Intel. This decision could be a problem for Intel, which has been supplying chips to Apple computers for years. It could also fundamentally change the way Apple does business in the PC market by gaining more control over what's going on in each device.

But Kuo's note is not just about Macs. He also said that Apple would continue to trust Taiwan Semiconductor for its iPhone A series of chips and iPad and would probably not turn to other solutions. And with Apple working on a new Apple car, Taiwan Semiconductor will also have the green light for this technology, according to 9to5Mac.

Of course, Apple, notoriously secretive, has not commented on its plans for the future, especially with regard to the chips for which it could opt. But Kuo is one of Apple's most reliable disabled, so he's likely to move on.
