A one-time in-game event is taking place this weekend in Fortnite: Battle Royale.
The first time this happened was back at the end of Season 4 and beginning of Season 5, when a rocket blasted out of the Evil Lair and zipped around the entire map, forming the rift in the sky that eventually led to the appearance of the CUBE, followed by all these corrupted areas, the floating island and so on and so forth.
The rocket itself was the product of the mysterious Visitor who arrived in the comet that grew over many weeks during Season 3 and led to the whole movie/superhero/super-villain theme of Season 4 as well as a giant hole where Dusty Depot once stood.
While the CUBE appeared in a similar in-game event last season, what’s transpired since has left many in the Fortnite community eager for a resolution to this entire "story" if you can call it that. Everything thing we’ve witnessed since the comet first appeared in the sky, to the rocket and ensuing rifts, to Kevin the CUBE and the cube monsters it spawned, is building toward this moment.
We are (hopefully) reaching the culmination of this story and an end to all things glowing purple. I’d love to see a new chapter in this game’s story.
In any case, you won’t want to miss this in-game event. So far, Epic Games has been really great about pulling these off. Somehow hundreds of thousands of gamers can login to the game all at the same time and experience the same one-time, in-game event and it goes off without a hitch. That’s impressive.
My colleague, Paul Tassi, called the rocket launch one of gaming’s greatest moments of all time, and I agree. It was really something to behold.
Meanwhile, Epic Games PR guru Nick Chester has taken to Twitter to hype the event, tweeting: “Trust me when I say: you do not want to miss this Fortnite one-time event. 1PM ET this Sunday. Be in game.”
So here’s what you need to know:
Epic Games announced today that the Fortnitmares LTM and Halloween event will come to an end this weekend on Sunday November 4th at 1 pm ET, 10 am PT. You’ll need to wrap up all your Fortnitemares challenges by then in order to unlock the Dark Engine glider.
That’s also when the in-game one-time event will begin. You need to be logged in and in an actual match to watch whatever is going down take place. I’m not sure yet if the event will take place in Playground as well, but I’ll find out what I can and update this post when I do.
It’s almost certain that the event will have to do with the CUBE and the floating island hovering above Leaky Lake. Will we see some massive transformation to the map? Will the lake drain and be replaced with the long-hinted-at lava and volcanoes? Hints in the Dark Bomber skin seem to suggest as much, though that could be misdirection.
You’ll need to either login to the game or watch your favorite streamer this Sunday to find out. Stay tuned . . . .
