With the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in just a few weeks, Nintendo has unveiled a wealth of new information both to appeal to Nintendo's nostalgic fans and to provide them with concrete details about the technical details of the game. These include information about how the games work online. and local multiplayer mode, and how they differ from previous Smash Bros. games.
The most notable change introduced in Smash's online structure is the removal of the "For Fun" and "For Glory" options. Rather than choosing whether or not to participate in an occasional / competitive binary system, you will instead choose to search for opponents that reflect a configuration profile of your choice, dictating options such as the use of items. Alternatively, you can choose to match players with players regardless of their preferences.
Beyond the type of battles you can search, you can also configure how Nintendo's servers connect you with other players, either by Global Smash Power (linked to an online ranking) or by geographical proximity.
Players will be able to manually start matchmaking online, fight after fight, or activate pairing in the background. This will allow you to play most modes of the game between battles while waiting for the start of a new battle. Finally, if you have a friend with you in the same room, you can fight other pairs of friends online, as a team rather than as individual fighters.
Online communication with other players will be possible in two ways. The first is to use the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app – it's the only official way to play with voice chat. Players can also use an assortment of pre-selected stock messages to send emotes and other short signals to the competition. Players will also have the opportunity to customize online profiles, called Smash Tags, to show their various achievements and rewards from the game as a whole.
Once a player has turned out to be a competent online competitor, he will have access to exclusive battles in play against elite opponents. These are reserved for "best of the best", according to Nintendo – there are no other details regarding the qualification for these "VIP" matches.
The online details are only part of the overall puzzle revealed today at the new Nintendo Direct. To stay up to date, check out the following stories to find the latest news on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:
