How to activate Alexa whisper mode, being deployed for Echo devices – BGR

Amazon has announced more than a dozen new products last month at its hardware event in Seattle, such as Echo Sub, Echo Link, Echo Auto and even a smart microwave. In addition to the new hardware, Amazon also introduced some new features, including one that would allow Alexa to whisper instead of speaking at full volume. Called "Whisper Mode", the feature was finally offered to Echo users in the United States on Friday.

The use cases of the new feature are pretty obvious, but as Amazon noted in its announcement, the Whisper Mode is great for interacting with Alexa early in the morning before everyone else be awake, or late at night after everyone has fallen asleep. With the whisper mode, you will not accidentally wake up the whole house.

Depending on your preference, it is possible to activate the silent mode on your Echo device:

  • Open the Alexa app on your mobile device and then go to settings > Alexa account > Alexa Voice > Replies > Whispered answers.
  • Otherwise, simply say "Alexa, activate silent mode" on your Echo device.

Once the silent mode is activated, you will see how Alexa can be silent. From the first videos we've seen about the feature in action, you'll probably have to be close enough to the device to hear its answers.

Whisper mode is one of the many software updates that Amazon introduced last month. Alexa Guard puts Alexa on alert for home invasions when you leave home. Intuitions allow Alexa to make assumptions about other smart home devices based on the time of day or your words. The integration of the camera at the door with Echo Show allows you can have a two-way conversation by saying "Alexa, answer the door."
