We returned to Generation 2 for this month's Pokémon GO Community Day and reached the second of what will be three of the stars in the region. We had already organized a community day Chikorita, and now it's Cyndaquil's turn.
The big advantage of this community day is that if you move Cyndaquil to its third stage, Typhlosion, it will know that the C-Day hit only, Blast Burn, deals 110 damage, which will make it much stronger in combat. Probably not as strong as Moltres, Entei or Flareon, but not bad either.
But the real purpose of the community day is, as always, to build a new family of brilliants. Catch a brilliant Cyndaquil and turn it into Glossy Typhlosion. So how do you maximize those chances?
These days, it seems that Niantic continues to slowly increase the brilliant resurgence rate. Previously, it was close to 3%, but I think it is closer to 5% today or more, which means that if you take 20 Cyndaquil, at least one of them should be brilliant. Again, this is not a guarantee and you could catch 50-100 without having one, but nowadays this situation seems more and more rare.
As always, you will want to operate the incense throughout the duration of the event, which will begin at 11 am PT in the Americas, for the next three hours, as incense will produce Pokemon from Community day. Add a lure of three hours near you and you'll drown in Cyndaquil before you even realize it.
Wait until the end of the event to choose your brilliant Cyndaquil, because you want to see if you can get a high IV before you commit. But do not wait too long, because you want to make sure your brilliant Typhlosion also has Blast Burn. Even if other people can now find this brilliant family after that, no one will have the unique move of the Community Day, which will make it a unique party.
There have been some problems during the community day up to now. In other areas, the game was so unplayable that Niantic actually added two hours more to the day to catch up, although I continue to hear about problems. It's unclear what the game will look like in the United States when that happens, but let's hope we do not face similar problems, and Niantic will understand what's going on.
After that, we'll probably have a Totodile Community Day in two months, and then we'll start with the Generation 3 starters. But Cyndaquil, my personal starter in Pokémon Silver, is a game I will certainly not miss.
