Chromebooks are known to be inexpensive, low-power computers, useful for schools and web browsing, and not much else. There are a handful of exceptions, but overall, the best-selling Chromebooks have always cost around $ 300, while the world of more expensive laptops is leaving Apple and Microsoft to divide.
The new Chromebook x360 14 from HP is not the first Chrome OS device out of this formula, but it could be the most compelling. Although the price is a bit high, compared to the average of Chromebooks, HP justifies it more than anything internally. It comes with 8GB of RAM and an Intel Core i3 or i5 processor, more powerful than the M series processors that are found in some premium Chromebooks.
The rest of the specifications will not disappoint you either. The convertible laptops are fully dedicated to the screen, and HP says the display shown here is a 14-inch FHD IHD FHD display with WLED backlighting (1920 x 1080). Backlight technology has also allowed HP to slim out, which means this 14-inch display fits into a case the same size as most 13-inch devices.
On the periphery, you'll also find a selection of above-average ports, including USB-C and most USB-A ports, a microSD port and a headphone port. You will need this microSD port if you have the ambition to store something important on the x360 14 because it only contains 64GB of storage.
The laptop starts at $ 599, with a price jump for the better specified versions. It is available for pre-order from HP and Best Buy today, with the full commercial version scheduled for September 21st.
