HTC's Vive Focus Standalone Will Soon Receive 6DoF VR Controllers

At the World Conference on the RV Industry in Nanchang, China, HTC announced today the launch of its new "6DoF Vive Development Kit", which includes a pair of 6DoF controllers as well that a follow-up attachment will be added to the Vive Focus. Much like the way developers can transfer their two-handed VR experiences to single-controller VR headsets via Vive Wave, this time they can even maintain two-handed controls with this development kit.

In a video clip provided by HTC's Chinese president, Alvin Wang Graylin, the 6DoF controllers seem to respond well, even with his wide range of moves – he has incredibly long members – in Beat SaberAlthough I would have liked to see him try a faster song just to push the material a step further.

For whatever reason, Graylin and his company are silent on the operation of the 6DoF controller tracking here. All we can see is the circular object located above each controller, and the attachment swells gently around a good part of the main body of the headset, which is likely to ensure maximum coverage for monitoring both controllers.

It should be noted that, since it is only a development kit for Vive Wave developers, it is unclear whether consumers will be able to upgrade their Vive Wave existing Vive Focus helmets. Even if this is the case, the commercial version may have a different design. Whatever the case may be, it's a positive sign of the future of Vive Focus and similar 6DoF VR standalone devices.
