UL, the company behind the benchmark application for 3DMark tablets and phones, has removed the new Huawei phones from its "Best Smartphone" rating after AnandTech discovered that its manufacturer increased its performance to test applications.
The phones that were written off were the P20, P20 Pro, Nova 3 and Honor Play.
"After testing the devices in our own lab and confirming that they were breaking our rules, we decided to remove the names of the affected models and remove them from our performance rankings," the company said in a statement.
For the Huawei case, the rules are actually a little blurry. Phones are allowed to adjust performance based on workload, resulting in peaks or performance declines for different applications, but they are not allowed to encode specific performance spikes for the application of reference. Huawei reportedly stated that the peak performance observed during the execution of the reference application was an intuitive jump determined by AI; However, when an unlabeled version of the performance test was run, the phones could not recognize it and, as a result, displayed lower performance.
In other words, phones are not so smart after all.
Huawei is not the first company to exceed these rules. Samsung also did the same in 2013 and, ironically, the results of these benchmark tests actually have little impact on the overall performance of the phone.
Although they can indicate how a phone can work under intense stress, it is best to discover average performance through individual tests.
