Huawei's Mate 20 Pro features a massive OLED display, a built-in fingerprint scanner, three rear-facing cameras, a high-speed Kirin 980 chipset, a massive 4,200 mAh battery, and an unlock system. face in 3D. Launched in London last week, Huawei finally presents the Mate 20 Pro in India next month as an exclusive Amazon, at an "affordable price".
This is the first time that Huawei, the world's second-largest smartphone maker, plans to launch its flagship Mate series in India. Earlier this year, the Shenzhen-based company also introduced the P series in India for the first time.

The Mate 20 Pro tries to be a versatile, whether it's performance or battery life. But is it enough to challenge the incumbents, especially when the iPhone XS Max (including the iPhone XS) and the Galaxy Note 9 have been praised for their outstanding performance?
I have to try the Huawei Mate 20 Pro before launching in India in New Delhi. That's what I think of the Mate 20 Pro based on my initial impressions.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro Specifications: Curved OLED Screen 6.39 inches (3120 x 1440), HDR Resolution Kirin 980 Processor | 6 GB of RAM | 128 GB of external storage, extension via the new "nano micro card" | EMUI 9, based on Android 9.0 Pie | Leica brand 40MP F1.8 27mm main camera, 8MP F2.4 80mm telephoto lens with 20x optical zoom and 20x F2.4 16mm ultra-wide, front camera 24MP F.20 | 4,200 mAh battery with 40 Watt support and wireless charging | FaceID as a 3D unlocking system | IP68 rated | Digital fingerprint scanner on screen | 157.8 x 72.3 x 8.6 mm; 189 grams
Huawei Mate 20 Pro first impressions: looks
I was surprised to see how Mate 20 Pro and Mate 10 Pro stand out in terms of design language. The curved edges on the sides and the square-shaped module that houses the lenses and the flash of the Leica rear-facing camera allow the Mate 20 Pro to stand out from the rest of the flagship devices launched this year. But I must say that the Mate 20 Pro is a huge phone. It does not seem heavy, however, surprisingly.
The Mate 20 Pro has a glass back with an aluminum frame (like all the other jewels of 2018). The phone is available in five colors: pink gold, midnight blue, emerald green, dusk and black. In India, however, the company could only bring the phone in a twilight or an emerald green. Huawei also introduces a new texture in the Mate 20 Pro. This is a "hyperoptic display model", which is only found on emerald green and midnight blue models. The handset is also IP68 resistant to water and dust.
On the front, the Mate 20 Pro looks a lot like the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, thanks to a curved OLED screen of 6.39 inches. The glasses are smaller and the phone has an "octa-curve" design where the front and rear windows are curved on all four edges. But unlike Note 9, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a larger notch than the Mate 20. This screen has a 3D depth detection camera, similar to the Apple Face ID that it's found on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS. Max.
The volume controls are next to the power button on the right side of the screen. The SIM card tray is at the bottom, right next to the USB Type-C port and the "invisible" speakers. And yes, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack on the Mate 20 Pro. The Mate 20 Pro is a novelty: a smaller SD Nano card, which is the proprietary format of Huawei. In simple terms, the phone does not offer the standard microSD card, which is really frustrating. We have no idea when the new Nano SD will be available for purchase and how much it costs.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro first impressions: The display
So far, Samsung's series of ratings was the absolute benchmark for the best screen technology. For example, Samsung Note 9 appears at the top of the screen. With the 6.39-inch display of the Mate 20 Pro, Huawei is launching a major challenge to Samsung. The OLED screen (3,120 x 1,440 pixels, 19.5: 9 aspect ratio), which is made by the Chinese technology group BOE, is sharp and bright, with a black color. Ink, bright colors and large viewing angles. I can not wait to put the Mate 20 Pro and Galaxy Note 9 side by side and compare them based on the brightness level and color accuracy of the screen.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro: First Impressions: 3D Face Recognition, Integrated Fingerprint Scanner
Just above the phone's massive 6.39-inch screen is a notch that houses a 3D depth-sensing camera for facial recognition, as well as a 24MP front-facing camera. The installation includes a 24 megapixel RGB camera with a spot projector, a proximity sensor, a floor illuminator and an infrared camera. I have not yet tested the feature myself, so it would be difficult to make the final verdict so soon. Hopefully we will be able to offer a detailed description of how the unlocking method works in our tests.
Alternatively, a fingerprint sensor is integrated on the screen. Place your finger on the fingerprint icon visible on the screen and unlock the device. I briefly tested it during a quick intervention, it worked as advertised. Vivo already offers the same functionality on some of its phones and the next OnePlus 6T will also feature a built-in fingerprint sensor.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro First Impressions: Performance
After the iPhone XS series, the Mate 20 Pro also offers a 7-nanometer processor in a phone. The A12 Bionic and Kirin 980 processors are proprietary chipsets.
According to Huawei, the custom-made Kirin 980 chipset offers a 20% speed boost over the Kirin 970 equipping the Honor 10 and P20 Pro, as well as an improved 40% energy efficiency. There are eight cores in total: two at 2.6 GHz for optimal performance, while the other four 1.8 GHz cores handle low power and two 1.92 GHz cores.
More importantly, the Kirin 980 chipset is endowed with two neural processing units (the Kirin 970 of last year only included a single neural core), the first to handle tasks such as recognition of & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; Objects and video rendering indispensable to take advantage of artificial intelligence. (AI) and machine learning.
The company says the Mate 20 Pro is one of the fastest smartphones on the market. Based on my limited tests, I can say that the Mate 20 Pro is fast and smooth. Once again, I have not been able to run the Huawei Mate 20 Pro in all its states yet, but the first impressions are encouraging.
Although the Mate 20 Pro is a superior hardware device, I must say that much needs to be done to perfect the software experience. For starters, the Mate 20 Pro uses Android 9.0 Pie, with the Huawei EMUI 9.0 overlay. Yes, the user interface has been much improved, but the problem is that it is quite cluttered and that the icons are terrible. For a flagship phone of the caliber of the Mate 20 Pro, Huawei must put a special emphasis on the user experience to make the device as efficient as the iPhone XS and OnePlus.
Let me remind you that the unit provided when handling was the test device and that you should expect that the user interface of the retail unit be better and more localized.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro: first impressions: battery, reverse wireless charging
Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with a battery of 4,200 mAh, the first flagship smartphone to have one. For comparison, the Galaxy Note 9 has a 4000 mAh battery. We therefore expect that the battery life of the Mate 20 Pro will be longer than that of the Note 9 battery. Also, remember that the Mate 20 Pro comes with a 40-watt Super Charger. which promises to charge the handset to 70% in just 30 minutes.
Most flagship smartphones launched this year, be it the iPhone XS, Note 9 or Pixel 3 XL, support wireless charging. The surprising part of the Mate 20 Pro is that it also doubles as a Qi wireless external charger. To test it, I dropped my Pixel 3 on the Mate 20 Pro and loading started automatically. This is a handy feature that can get you to charge the other phone in an emergency.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro First Impressions: Triple Cameras
The P20 Pro was the first commercially available smartphone to feature a triple camera configuration at the back. With the Mate 20 Pro, Huawei has retained the Leica triple camera lenses, but has made some changes here and there to enhance the experience by adding more intelligent artificial intelligence features.
Thus, the Mate 20 Pro gets the 40MP wide angle camera and the 8MP telephoto lens, like the P20 Pro, which also offers a 3x optical zoom. Now, the difference between the two lies in the fact that the 20MP monochrome sensor on the P20 Pro has been replaced by an ultra-wide 20.2MP lens. The implementation is similar to that of the LG V40 triple camera configuration.
Based on the limited time spent with the phone, I found that switching between three goals was fast. You must drag a zoom slider toward the bottom of the screen to access a wide-angle lens. Like the P20 Pro, Huawei has added artificial intelligence features (it can now recognize 1,500 scenes) in the Mate 20 Pro's camera. It can recognize various scenes and adjust the camera settings to get the best picture possible. Then there is the AI Cinema mode and AI 4D predictive focus, which I unfortunately could not test because of the shortage of time. On the front, a 24MP camera was given, but I did not have a chance to test it.
Expect a thorough review of the camera and comparisons with the iPhone XS and Note 9. We are also delighted to offer the Mate 20 Pro with the Pixel 3, particularly appreciated for its camera, even in low light conditions.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro first impressions: early verdict
The Mate 20 Pro represents Huawei's growing ambition to compete with Apple and Samsung in the premium segment. Although the company is not looking for volumes with the Mate 20 Pro in India, the idea is to offer consumers an alternative to the iPhone XS Max and Galaxy Note 9.
At the moment, we can not confirm the price and availability of the Mate 20 Pro in India. All we know is that the launch is scheduled for next month and that the phone will be exclusive to Amazon India. The Mate 20 Pro is already available in the UK and various European markets, priced at € 1049 (around R88 88 871).
