Performance, battery life and charging
Looking for power? You're lucky because the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 already have a lot.
In the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, you will find the Kirin 980 processor as well as 6 GB of RAM. Storage is available at 128GB with the option of adding an additional 256GB via a proprietary nano memory card. Overall, Huawei says the Kirin 980 chip will be 20% faster than its predecessor, with a 40% increase in energy efficiency.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 features a Snapdragon 845 processor with 6GB of RAM for 128GB storage configuration and 8GB of RAM for the 512GB option; If none of these options provides enough storage, you can still add 512 GB of storage through the Micro SD card slot. Anyway, Samsung has found a winning combination because it is one of the phones with the highest score in our benchmark tests.
In terms of battery capacity, the Mate 20 Pro has a slight advantage at 4,200 mAh compared to the 4.00 mAh battery of Note 9. We have not yet had the opportunity to test the Mate 20 Pro , but Huawei generally has a better battery life compared to Samsung.
What really seals the case for this category is the charge. On the Galaxy Note 9 you will find the fairly standard Quick Charge 2.0 as well as the wireless charging Qi at 7.5W. Comparatively, the Mate 20 Pro offers an ultra fast charge via its 40 W adapter as well as wireless Qi charging and reverse wireless charging, which means it can charge another wireless phone.
We are temporarily giving this round to Huawei's Maw 20 Pro. In addition to a more efficient processor and a more efficient battery, it also offers more innovative loading options. We will take the Mate 20 Pro to the heart of our review and update this section if necessary.
Winner: Huawei Mate 20 Pro
Design and sustainability
It goes without saying that you expect excellent specifications on a flagship smartphone, but aesthetics and durability certainly can not be ignored. Samsung and Huawei are both beautiful phones. Let's see how these two devices compare.
On the front of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, you'll find a curved 6.4-inch screen with the very popular notch at the top of the phone and a slight cover at the bottom. Flip the phone over and the first thing you'll notice is the camera module; it's square and a bit awkward, especially compared to the Huawei P20 Pro. And on the dark blue and emerald green versions of the Mate 20 Pro, the glass has been etched into what Huawei calls a Hyper Optics pattern to minimize fingerprints on the phone and offer better grip. If it's not your forte, the other three color options have traditional glass backs.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is a traditional glass sandwich. At the front, there is a curved 6.4 inch screen with minimal framing. The back is rather indefinable with a dual camera configuration and a fingerprint sensor.
In terms of sustainability, there is not much difference between phones. Both are constructed of tempered glass and have an IP68 degree of protection for protection against water and dust. For either phone, you will definitely want to invest in a deal.
In the end, both phones have their own aesthetic that makes them attractive to different people. And durability is a wash, we call it a tie.

Display
Regarding the beautiful screens, you can not go wrong with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. In fact, there are more similarities than differences between the two phones for this category.
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a 6.39-inch OLED display with a resolution of 3,120 x 1,440 pixels. The aspect ratio for the phone is 19.5: 9. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 features a 6.4-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2,960 x 1,440 pixels. The aspect ratio is similar to 18: 5, but the screen of the Mate 20 Pro is slightly wider because of the notch.
This trick is a tie. You can not go wrong with either screen and we think most people will not notice any real difference between the two.
Winner: Tie
Camera
Huawei and Samsung have some of the best smartphone cameras on the market. But who wins when you oppose the Mate 20 Pro to Galaxy Note 9?
On the Huawei Mate 20 Pro you will find a triple camera module with 40, 20 and 8 megapixel lenses. Huawei used a 27mm wide-angle lens for the main camera with an aperture of f / 1.8. The 16mm ultra-wide-angle secondary lens has an aperture of f / 2.2, while the tertiary camera is equipped with a 80mm telephoto lens with f / 2.4 aperture and optical stabilization of the image (OIS). The front camera comes to 24 megapixels with an f / 2.0 lens.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9, meanwhile, has a set of two 12-megapixel cameras. The most exciting thing about Note 9 is the f / 1.5-2.4 Variable Aperture that lets you get great pictures in any lighting. The front camera of Note 9 is no slouch either, with a resolution of 8 megapixels and a large aperture of f / 1.7.
At the moment, we are giving Huawei the win in this category. Huawei's flagship cameras have always had excellent cameras and we believe that the Mate 20 Pro will continue in this tradition. That said, we still need to do more camera tests on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and we will update this category if necessary.
Winner: Huawei Mate 20 Pro
Software and updates
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 are Android phones, but neither of them come with a stock version of the operating system. Instead, Samsung and Huawei offer custom skins designed to enhance the user experience.
On the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 you will find Android 8.1 Oreo with the highly personalized Samsung Experience print. Although the customization is nice, there are many preinstalled applications that take up a lot of space.
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with Android 9.0 Pie under EMUI skin 9. Although Huawei's EMUI skin is not perfect, it is more refined than previous iterations.
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro performs this trick. For the most part, we won it because it comes with Android 9.0 Pie while the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 comes with Android 8.1 Oreo. Huawei is also committed to updating every two months the software updates of its Mate and P series, and we expect it to continue with the Mate 20 Pro tradition. Samsung has not made such a commitment.
Winner: Huawei Mate 20 Pro
Special features
The abundance of special features characterizes the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Both phones offer unique features hard to find on other phones and make them incredibly interesting.
Some features distinguish the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. First, the Mate 20 Pro is the first Huawei phone to come with a 40W charging adapter. With the adapter, you can charge the phone from zero to 70% in just 30 minutes. The phone also supports wireless charging and can actually be used to charge other Qi compatible devices, a first for smartphones.
In addition to unlocking the face on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, there is also a built-in fingerprint sensor on the screen. Although most users will probably opt for the secure face authentication feature, it's nice to have several options.
On the other hand, the essential feature of the Samsung Galaxy Note range is the S Pen Pen. By 2018, it has improved significantly. In addition to drawing and taking notes, the S Pen is now a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device that works as a remote control for your camera and even for PowerPoint presentations when the Galaxy Note 9 is in DeX mode. Speaking of DeX mode, Samsung has incorporated this wonderful feature in Note 9, which now only requires a cable. With DeX, you can quickly connect your phone to an external monitor (with a USB-C to HDMI adapter) to create a desktop computing environment.
Samsung's digital assistant, Bixby, is also integrated with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. This is largely a more limited version of Google Assistant, but works well with other Samsung smart devices. Samsung also offers Intelligent Scan, which allows you to unlock the phone and applications with your iris and face.
Both phones have awesome features hard to find on other phones, but Note 9 has the advantage.
Winner: Samsung Galaxy Note 9
Price
The phones Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 are flagship phones and carry the exorbitant price associated with the latest technology. Although the US price has not yet been announced, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro will be sold in Europe at a price of 1049 euros (about $ 1,220). The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 starts at $ 999.
Winner: Huawei Mate 20 Pro
In the end, you can not go wrong with any of these phones. But since it is a comparison of specifications, we must give the crown to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
In addition to having a more rugged processor and battery, the Mate 20 Pro also offers impressive advancements such as 40W charging and reverse wireless charging. And we would absolutely not fail to take into account the camera module. The Huawei P20 Pro has produced some of the best photos ever seen on a smartphone.
