IFixit partnership for Motorola

This week, Motorola became the first smartphone manufacturer to provide OEM parts to iFixit. It is a gesture that is more important than its immediate result. The supply of parts to iFixit means that Motorola publicly signs its support for user-repaired smartphones and tablets. In addition to making devices that are surprisingly easy to fix (sometimes), this is Motorola's most important and public step in that direction.

The iFixit website and store provides detailed instructions for dismantling and restoring a wide variety of personal electronic products. This website has been the inescapable source for a thorough analysis of the inside of phones over the last ten years. Now they have proven themselves to the point where Motorola is willing to do business.

Motorola's role in this situation is to provide iFixit with parts for sale on its website for repair. Motorola is making money in this situation by eliminating phone components they may not have made anymore – otherwise, they might just be sitting in bins, unused. IFixit employees have the advantage of being the only source of original Motorola official parts provided directly by Motorola.

The iFixit store will sell a set of Motorola official OEM repair kits that include parts, tools and a step-by-step guide for all the phones the user needs. The first collection includes 17 different kits from iFixit, ranging from the Motorola Moto G4 Plus LCD Display and Digitizer Assembly Kit to the Motorola Moto X Play Replacement Battery Kit.

"For repairers like us, this partnership is representative of a broader movement in favor of our right to repair," said Elise Barsch of iFixit. "This is proof that OEMs and independent repairs can coexist. Big business and social responsibility, as well as innovation and sustainability, need not be mutually exclusive. Motorola is one of the industry leaders of a forward-looking company – not just in six months with next quarter margins, but in decades when devices are sentenced for the landfill. "
