Third-party services that generate fake subscribers, "likes" and comments contravene both the community's policies and its terms of use.
Instagram has created artificial intelligence tools to automatically identify the false popularity. Today, AI has been unleashed.
"We'll start by removing the" likes, follow-ups, and inauthentic comments "from accounts that use third-party apps to boost their popularity," says Instagram.
If you have already accumulated a false popularity, you may receive an in-app message warning you that your fake numbers have been erased. If you noticed a sudden drop in the number of followers or activities this week, this is probably the reason for this new campaign.
Instagram also requires users who have used boosting and botting services to change their password in order to secure their accounts again – third-party services that you have used in the past could discreetly use your account maliciously.
"Since the early days of Instagram, we have automatically detected and deleted fake accounts to protect our community," says Instagram. "Today's update is just another step to make Instagram a dynamic community where people connect and exchange authentically."
Instagram also plans to take "extra steps" to tackle an inauthentic activity in the near future.
