Instagram tests ‘tap to see next post’ navigation system

Instagram is testing a major overhaul to how users navigate the application. As reported by TechCrunch today, Instagram is testing a “new way to move through posts” in its mobile app. This would allow users to tap to see the next post, as opposed to scrolling vertically.

What this change means is that instead of using your finger to scroll up and down through the Instagram feed, you’d tap on either side of the interface to advance forwards and backwards between posts. Instagram is currently testing this new navigation system in the Explore tab of the app.

Essentially, Instagram is trying to capitalize every further on the incredibly popular Stories interface that was first made popular by Snapchat. Given the popularity of Snapchat and Instagram Stories, users clearly find some sort of appeal in tapping to see additional content instead of scrolling

Instagram is testing this new navigation with a small number of users via the Explore tab and there’s no evidence of it coming to the main Instagram feed, at least as of now. Those included in the test were presented with a pop-up upon launching the Instagram app explaining the change. “Tap through posts, just like you tap through stories,” Instagram explains.

Instagram confirmed the test to TechCrunch:

“We’re always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and bring you closer to the people and things you love.” As for whether this could come to the main feed, an Instagram spokesperson tells me that not something it’s actively thinking about right now.
