Apple's IOS 12 has already surpassed iOS 11 after just two and a half weeks and is now installed on 47% of iDevices; iOS 11 now runs at 45%, according to data from the analysis company Mixpanel.
Before the launch of iOS 12 on September 17, iOS 11 was running on 85% of iPhones and iPads, according to the Apple Developer Support page.
In comparison, it took nearly two months to iOS 11 last year to reach a 50% adoption rate. The participation rate this year is actually more similar to that of iOS 10, released in 2016 and installed on 48% of devices in just two weeks.
However, to date, iOS 9 2015 remains the leader in speed of absorption. Launched on September 16, 2015, it only took eight days to surpass iOS 8, and in 10 days it accounted for 50% of the installation base. (One month after release, iOS 9 accounted for 62% of iDevices, compared to iOS 8, which dropped to just 29.65%.
Apple has not published yet official figures regarding the absorption of iOS 12.
According to Jack Gold, senior analyst at J. Gold Associates, the popularity of the most recent version of iOS may be due in part to the positive reviews and timing of its release.
"Apple just got a major launch, so the problem is new in the minds of people," Gold said. "This time of year, people are [also] more involved in computer science, especially if we consider the education market with back to school ".
Among other features, iOS 12 is designed to be faster than its predecessor, even on older iPhones models. It features FaceTime group chats, new emoticons, "Screen Time" to track the use of iDevices, redesigned notifications and Siri shortcuts.
