A month and a half after Apple released the final version of iOS 12, it ran on at least 60% of iOS devices. This is the latest statistic published on the App Store's support page, which shows a 10% jump in the use of iOS 12 during a period when the latest version of Google's Android remained below 0.1%.
The Apple and Google surveys of device usage were compared. Apple polled the iOS App Store on Oct. 29, and Google collected data over a seven-day period ending Oct. 26. The adoption figure applies to all iOS devices, with an even higher rate of 63% for iOS devices introduced over the past four years. The gains were fully realized at the expense of iOS 11: in each case, iOS 11 lost users to the benefit of iOS 12, while the number of users of earlier versions of IOS remained stable.
The Google figures continue strangely to show a growth of adoption in the previous version of Android, Oreo, which went from 19.2% to 21.5% over a month. This means that Oreo is right in front of Marshmallow, which is now at 21.3%, but still behind Nougat, which owns 28.2% of the Android user base. At the same time, Android Pie was previously unlisted on the Google chart, indicating it has "a distribution less than 0.1%" and is not listed again this month.
The sale of new hardware should help the numbers of both companies: Apple's latest iPhones come with iOS 12 pre-installed, and its new iPad Pro will also do it next week. Google has started selling Pixel 3 phones with Android Pie on board, but its next Pixel Slate will run on Chrome OS instead of Android Pie. The search giant offers Pie a free download for Android users since early August, more than a month before Apple offers the iOS version to 12 users. iOS in mid-September.
