A much-needed feature was not available when iPhone XS arrived last week, but Apple is working to provide Dual SIM support for these new handsets. These advanced features are included in the first beta version of iOS 12.1.

When the full version of the operating system update will be available later this fall, the iPhone XS and XS Max will be able to simultaneously connect to two cellular providers.

This is possible because both devices support two SIM cards. In most cases, the main account is linked to an eSIM, while a second account can be added to a nano-SIM.

On devices running iOS 12.1, a new option has been added to the Cellular panel in the Settings application. "Add a cellular plan" does exactly what you would expect: it allows the user to enter the details of a second wireless service plan.

To avoid confusion, this feature is only available for the iPhone XS and XS Max, not for older models. It will not be in the iPhone XR either.

Advantages of the Dual SIM iPhone

This advanced feature allows the user to have one number for business and another for personal calls. Or easily add a local service plan when traveling outside your home country. Or use a service plan for data and another for voice calls.

Both numbers can be active at the same time. If a call on one line arrives while you are on the other line, simply switch to voicemail.

AT & T, Verizon and T-Mobile all support the eSIM, albeit reluctantly. Sprint is the only hurdle among the four major US carriers.

The Apple website contains a list of operators around the world who plan to support eSIM.

Be there soon?

Dual SIM support for iPhone will arrive in iOS 12.1, but we do not know when it will be introduced. Apple recently released the first beta.

Another novelty of this operating system update is Group FaceTime, which allows several people to chat at the same time. This is also included in iOS 12.1 beta 1.
