The Samsung Galaxy Note 9's camera has similar 12MP sensors behind the telephoto and wide lenses. It also has a live focus feature that simulates the background blur, which also allows you to adjust the blur after taking a picture.
We went out to Heart of Alene, Idaho, and took a bunch of photos so we could see how Apple's new iPhone XS Max behaved well with Note 9.
Comparison of High Dynamic Range (HDR)
In this first portrait shot, you can see how much better the dynamic range is on the iPhone XS Max. The image t-shirt of Note 9 is off, while the XS Max image is completely balanced. Not only that, but the darker areas of the photo are brighter on the iPhone.
Here, the sky on note 9 is overexposed, and there is a huge loss of color. If you look closely at the buildings in the background, they are also destroyed. However, note 9 was able to keep the subject brighter and better exposed. We also noticed a lot more saturation on the image of the note 9, which is a personal preference, but we prefer the more natural look.
Here is where the story changes. When shooting against the sun, Note 9 does a better job on dynamic range. The highlights are the same, but note 9 helps keep the darker areas of the scene brighter. There is also less flare on the note 9.
Now here is a picture of the same scene, except in portrait mode. The sunspot on note 9 is larger, but it is much better to keep the subject exposed correctly. There is once again a stray light on the iPhone XS Max image.
In this picture, note 9 shows a much better dynamic range inside the garage.
Comparison of photos in portrait and live portrait mode
In portrait mode, you'll notice that the XS Max has more blur in the background. You will also notice that the picture jersey of Note 9 is a bit smothered. One of the things we like in the XS Max image is that it is more balanced, with a clearer background.
The iPhone XS and XS Max feature a new depth control feature and offer a much wider blur adjustment range than that of the Note 9. The iPhones can go to a depth setting of F16 at F1.4. Note 9 can only go from 0 to 7.
The Live Focus photo background of the Note 9 can not be as blurry as on the iPhone XS Max, and we think that many people would like to have that kind of freedom.
When shooting plants, Note 9 does a lot better. In this picture, the white balance is more accurate and the picture more pleasant. The XS Max encounters blurry edges, while Note 9 performs well.
On this picture of a flower, the XS Max actually blurs the entire stem. Note 9 is able to detect the stem and keep it in the foreground. This is a huge benefit for the note.
Comparing front view modes, note 9 is a bit flexible. There are many more details in the face with the XS Max. The background is also brighter and more balanced on the iPhone.
Another advantage of the XS Max is that you can also adjust the blur on portraits on the front panel. Note 9 is not able to do that. As a result, the XS Max is able to get portrait shots with incredibly high levels of blur, and it's actually very nice.
By comparing the photos of objects in Portrait mode, the iPhone XS Max gets a much better dynamic range. Both phones have trouble with the fuzzy border, but the note 9 is a bit better.
On this photo with a small fold inside two poles, the iPhone XS Max does not completely detect the need to blur the interior of the object. Note 9 does an almost perfect job. However, the dynamics on note 9 is pretty bad.
Comparing the details of the photo
Now let's compare the details without using Portrait or Live focus modes.
In this shot of a flower, both photos look very detailed, but it seems that the note 9 is either more contrasted or more detailed compared to the XS Max. You will have to decide for yourself which picture will be the best for color reproduction.
In this telephoto image of a tree, note 9 has more contrast and is also more detailed.
Here is another comparison of the details. The XS Max has a much better dynamic range and they look similar in detail. The note 9 has more contrast and adds more saturation to the image.
Comparing now classic selfie photos, the difference in dynamic range is shocking. The sky on the image of note 9 is completely destroyed. On the XS Max, you can see each cloud and the sky is actually blue. At the same time, the face is properly exposed and the details are more detailed.
Here is a wide picture taken inside a building. The dynamic range of the XS Max is significantly better and it is able to accurately reproduce the colors of the sky and the background.
Comparison of low light photos
On some low light pictures, you will notice a few things here. First of all, the dynamics is slightly better on the iPhone and the white balance is much more accurate. The biggest difference is that note 9 adds a little too much softening to eliminate noise. Just look at all the details in the pants that are lost on the note 9.
In this portrait and live focus mode comparison. Note 9 can not accurately detect the face and makes it blurry even after several attempts. In addition, the dynamic range is better on the XS Max.
We shot these images with extremely low light. The note 9 offers a very impressive noise reduction, giving the picture a much more detailed look. You can easily see more noise with the XS Max. However, the white balance is far from note 9. The XS Max was about as accurate as possible.
Now, on the front camera, the dynamic range differences were huge. The painting on the image of note 9 was completely destroyed. With the iPhone XS Max you can see every detail. The XS Max was also better at the white balance.
Now, on the outside, towards the end of the night, both phones were not doing a great job with dynamic range, but the iPhone XS Max is a bit better. The white balance is much better on the iPhone, and the note 9 has added much too much saturation.
Finally, we have a low light scene with bokeh in the background to compare live portrait and focus modes. Note 9 had problems with accurate face detection and ended up creating a slight blur. The XS Max did a good job with the blur. Note 9 was already at the maximum amount of blur, while the XS Max was at the default setting of F4.5.
Now here is where it gets amazing on the iPhone XS Max. We set the depth to the maximum setting of F1.4 and the bokeh really starts to stand out. This shows how much additional blur you can get on the iPhone XS Max can, in our opinion, convince many customers to choose the XS or XS Max over the 9 note.
If you compare the blur on the left and right sides of the iPhone image, you will see that they are directed directionally, depending on their position in the frame. It's something that professional cameras do, and it's nice that Apple has added that realistic touch. On note 9, the bokeh simply grows when you increase the blur, and that's about it all.
