It seems that Apple has another software problem with the release of watchOS 5.1, a small number of Apple Watch owners reporting that the update makes their device useless.

According to a handful of reports posted on social media and forums such as Reddit, Apple has just released a software update of the watchOS 5.1 software that "brick" Apple Watch hardware.
Users affected by the apparent bug can download the update and begin the installation. The process seems to be stuck when Watch displays the Apple logo, which stays on screen for hours.
The complications seem limited to the Apple Watch Series 4, although other models of Apple Watch may also be affected. Until now, however, reports are limited to Series 4 devices, including Nike + versions.
While some owners of the 4 series have reported the problem of panic, others have followed the installation process of watchOS 5.1 without any problem.
Whether the problem is local – perhaps a non-compliant Watch configuration – or a problem with the update itself is also unknown. Apple has not commented on the reports and continues to host watchOS 5.1 on its servers.
With reports on peripherals chained in nature, users would be well served to delay the update of their unit until the problem is solved.
The difficulties of watchOS 5.1 come on the heels of another bug that, earlier this month, caused the Series 4 devices to loop back to Australia when the country went into daylight saving time.
