LG could plan a phone camera with no less than 16 goals

Dual-lens cameras on the back of smartphones? About the same for the course now. Triple-lens cameras? Yes, we saw them too. But 16 lenses packed in a backup camera? Now we are really talking, LG.

The recently filed patents, spotted by LetsGoDigital, suggest that LG is considering at least introducing 16 lenses into a camera in the future, which would make it a hex camera. Apparently, with a curved configuration, these 16 goals could capture a photo from several different perspectives and even simulate the motion of a still image.

It would also be easier to replace objects on photos, according to patent documents, because the phone would be able to capture more information about them in three dimensions rather than in two. Some rather nice effects might be possible.

16 is the new 2

The patent then explains how a mirror and a flash can be placed separately at the back of a phone equipped with a hex-lens camera – to illuminate subjects and make taking selfies easier. Using the camera facing the back rather than the front -facing one.

As always with patent filings like this one, there is no guarantee that we will ever see a LG smartphone with 16 lenses on its rear-facing camera: many patented ideas never reach real products. But it's a sign that LG has something like this on the drawing board that he would like to develop further.

In the meantime, we are stuck with cameras with two, three or maybe five lenses. It seems that cameras and camera lenses could soon become an even more important factor in choosing a new smartphone.
