LG V40 ThinQ vs Galaxy Note 9 vs iPhone XS Max

With the LG V40 ThinQ, LG, too often shunted as a phonemaker, wins against the Apple iPhone XS Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with its supersize phone 2018.

In a mobile climate where big, high-end phones compete for money, while being squeezed from beneath by cheaper but high-quality phoneme makers like OnePlus, LG is struggling to stand out. But with five (five!) Goals in total, the V40 does it absolutely. To stop your eyeballs, there are three lenses on the back (the Huawei P20 Pro has been performing very well this year) and two in the front. The V40 has a large, bright display, advanced processor, waterproof, wireless charging and stereo speakers.

But Samsung and Apple have launched a long shadow, and their big-screen branded phones are also playing to keep. Although we have now reviewed the LG V40, the Galaxy Note 9 and the iPhone XS Max, we still have a lot of tests to do before we oppose them. For now, here is how the specifications align. Size and clarity of the screen

Does this surprise you? The iPhone XS Max has the largest screen of the three, with a 6.5-inch screen. The V40 and Galaxy Note 9 are available at 6.4 inches each. But it's the LG V40 that has the highest pixel density, unlike the other two. We're going to look at all three in different lighting conditions, but they're all great for watching videos, reading stories, and keeping pace with social networks.

Three rear cameras against two

Our comparisons of mega-cameras are yet to come – they require a mammoth effort, but are worth the wait. What we can tell you is that the LG V40 is muscular with options and tools for cameras. For example, you can take a picture of each rear camera at the same time to use it individually or to embroider it together.

There are AI camera settings, such as Note 9 and the Huawei P20 Pro, that change your settings when it detects any of the 18 scenes (for example, pets, blue sky). As for the iPhone XS Max, you can take spectacular pictures with digital lighting effects.

More importantly, the LG V40 takes great pictures. Although each phone has its strengths, there is no doubt that the V40 occupies a prominent place in the higher echelons of camera photography.

However, it remains to be seen whether all of these goals are really needed to produce great pictures or mostly showcases to impress buyers and differentiate LG and others. We are waiting to see what Google is coming Pixel 3 can do with (probably) a goal on the back, compared to LG's trio.

LG V40 is relatively thin on the storage space

Just a few years ago, a 64GB repository was pretty standard. Now, times have changed. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 gives you 128GB to start, or you can pay more for 512GB. This does not even include the 512GB of external storage that you can develop with a microSD card.

Apple, meanwhile, offers the iPhone XS Max three storage options: 64GB, 256GB and 512GB, with no expandable storage. So, although the LG V40 ThinQ lets you develop up to 2T (in theory, 512GB cards are currently on the market), the total remains lower than Samsung's largest capacity. The total capacity of the V40 is greater than that of the iPhone XS Max, when you include microSD storage.

Battery life

Comparing the running time of a battery on a single charge is tricky because many factors come into play. The battery life does not depend solely on the size of the battery (the capacity, measured in milliamperes hours). There is also an interaction between the processor, the effectiveness of the phone's basic software in managing resources and, of course, what you do with the phone.

The battery capacity of the LG V40 is lower than that of Note 9. Up to now, the battery life seems to be as short. However, under actual conditions of use, LG's flagship phone is more than able to guide you throughout your day.

Do not forget that Apple will not provide battery capacity but will instead provide vague and relative descriptions. For example, the iPhone XS Max will last 90 minutes longer with a single charge than the iPhone X. All three phones feature a wireless charging and waterproofing feature, so the main differences are in camera performance and their individual claims of notoriety.

The Galaxy Note 9 features the S Pen (which now also works as a remote control), the V40, its five cameras and the iPhone XS Max, FaceID, Memoji animations and portrait mode. The value of these extras depends on your personal preferences.

For example, if you are delighted with photography, lighting the portrait of the iPhone or the V40's camera software might appeal to you more. If you are an advanced user who likes touching a stylus, the Galaxy Note 9 has no rival.

Price and value: the best value for money

The LG V40 ThinQ is the cheapest big phone on the bench in absolute terms, but depending on the carrier with whom you buy it, the savings you make may not be a big deal. In the United States, it sells for between $ 900 and $ 980. For a little more, you can get a phone with a stylus or a longer battery (the Galaxy Note 9), or have access to Apple's customer service in its outlets (iPhone XS Max).

There is also the question of storage. For maximum capacity, the Galaxy Note 9 offers you the best offer of the three. However, if you are trying to reach 512 GB, you will save money by buying a LG V40 and making the difference with a microSD card.

For the best offer, keep an eye on seasonal promotions. This can very well change the balance one way or another when buying a phone.

But what about the Pixel 3 XL?

Cool it, itchy fingers. Before you spend your money, wait until you see what Pixel 3 and 3XL will bring.

The Google event on October 9 in New York will be held in a few days and the Pixel line enjoys a solid reputation for excellent photography (on two total cameras), smoothness and price cheaper than Apple.

So give up this information and get it after landing the Pixel 3XL, probably in mid-October.
