LG unveiled LG's ThinQ V40, revealing a huge phone with a stunning 6.4-inch display, all the power you could want and five camera lenses. But is it worth it to spend your money or should you rather invest in another high profile flagship product? The Galaxy Note 9 is one of the best phones on the market so far. It also has a large 6.4-inch screen, incredible power and a great camera. Which one should you buy? We compared both to find out.

Performance, battery life and charging
Both phones are equipped with the Snapdragon 845, making it one of the most powerful mobile devices in the world. Both solutions will provide smooth performance on a variety of applications and will handle most mobile games extremely well. Note 9 is technically more powerful, with the option for 2GB of extra RAM and a water cooling system that prevents the processor from overheating, allowing it to run for a long time.
The V40 contains a respectable 3300 mAh battery, while the Note 9 comes with a huge 4000 mAh battery. Curiously, the life of the battery is not very different. We had daily use of each of these phones, but Note 9 could eventually move on to a second day with light usage – not something we thought the V40 could handle. You will find a wireless charge on both, as well as a fast charge. However, the V40 recharges faster than Note 9, thanks to QuickCharge 3.0 support.
The LG V40 ThinQ recharges faster than Note 9, but it's pretty much the only area in which it's higher. Note 9 wins this fight with more power and a bigger battery.

Design and sustainability
These are superior quality materials. The V40 and Note 9 are both made from glass on aluminum frames. The design of Note 9 is a touch-up of Note 8, while the LG V40 is a dead ring for V35 and V30. While this benefits Note 9 – Note 8 is still a beautiful phone – it's a disappointment for the V40, which has a hard time attracting the eyes in the same way as Note 9. We said that our review was too subtle and that in this contest, the note 9 stands out more.
You will find IP68 certified water resistance in both phones. As both are covered with glass, you will want to invest in a deal. We noticed that the lighter weight of the V40 made it less solid than the much heavier Note 9.
Both phones have an excellent design and feel good in the hand – but Note 9 wins with a design that is just a little more eye-catching.

Display
The screen divides opinion, but the V40's 6.4-inch OLED display is superb. It displays a resolution of 3,120 x 1,440 pixels and, thanks to the OLED screen technology, the blacks are deep and black, while the colors are beautifully vibrant. But LG comes up against a master here, and the AMOLED display of Note 9 is one of the best on the market. The 6.4-inch screen of the Note offers a similar resolution of 2,960 x 1,440 pixels, as well as blacks and bright colors, but you'll find that the Note 9 screen gets brighter, making it easier to the vision in full sun.
The display of the LG V40 is excellent, but that of the Note 9 is better.

Camera
The main feature of the LG V40 ThinQ is without a doubt its five lenses for cameras – three in the back, two in the front. The three at the back include a 12-megapixel main lens, a 16-megapixel wide angle sub-lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens. This is an impressive range, reminiscent of the Huawei P20 Pro, and adds flexibility to your shots. However, it is not perfect and the quality is uneven from one lens to another, the main goal of 12 megapixels being superior to the other two. This can lead to quality disparity when switching between lenses. He is also plagued by buggy software.
In contrast, Note 9 has only two lenses on the back – a 12-megapixel main lens associated with a 12-megapixel telephoto lens. However, Samsung has spent a lot of time tweaking this camera suite, resulting in smooth software and consistent quality in a variety of situations. The Galaxy S9's variable aperture returns and Note 9 launches a scene-driven optimizer powered by A. While the two sports similar to A.I. optimization, we definitely prefer the results of Note 9.
On the video side, you'll be able to record at 4K at 60fps on both, but there's no super slow motion Note 9 on the V40. Both are also capable of portrait modes, but we found that the focus of the V40 was extremely unreliable.
Both phones have been widely marketed thanks to the power of their cameras. This category is therefore of paramount importance. Despite the flexibility of the two additional lenses of the LG V40 ThinQ, it remains lowered by inconsistent software and buggy software. The sophisticated software of the Note 9 and the incredible low-light camera win here.

Software and updates
Although both phones come with Android 8.1 Oreo, Google's operating system is hidden under custom appearances. Note 9 comes with the Samsung user interface, a very good user interface with many customizable options. The applications included are not bad either, with Samsung Pay and Samsung Health particularly remarkable. The V40 comes with LG's UX Envelope and also offers customizable options and some useful features directly from LG. However, you could find a lot of operator bloatware, depending on where you buy your phone.
Unfortunately, no phone comes with Android 9.0 Pie, which is a misstep for both. Both have Pie in the works, but we believe that LG will release the update first, based only on past performance. Both phones will benefit from two years of Android updates. You will get Android Q on both.
Although we prefer Android stock, both phones have good custom user interfaces. However, LG's updates are generally better than Samsung's and help him win this round.

Special features
The LG V40 ThinQ comes with special features that you may find beneficial. At the top of the list is probably the Boombox speaker, which uses the internal space of the phone as a sound chamber and increases the volume, but the A. The key comes in second place, providing quick and easy access to the Google Assistant. It's better than the Bixby key of Note 9. This A.I. is integrated at a high level, including camera optimization and easy access to Google Lens.
Bixby on note 9 is still not fantastic, but the A.I. digital camera is certainly stronger than the one on the V40. Note 9 comes with an enhanced Samsung DeX mode – just plug a cable to convert a simple monitor into a desktop computer. Then there is the signature function of note 9 – the S Pen. This nifty little stylus allows you to quickly access a variety of features, scribble on a screen saver and capture gifs from videos. But that's not all: it now has a Bluetooth low power connection that allows it to trigger the camera, presentation selector or other uses.
The V40 has some strong features, but Note 9 is packed with extras.

The LG V40 ThinQ is an excellent phone, but it comes up against one of Samsung's most advanced phones. It is this level of polish that wins the grade 9 here. The extra level of features and other settings make Note 9 stand out from any other phone. The water-cooled processor, the gorgeous design and the superbly crafted camera are especially good reasons to choose Note 9 over the V40.
The prices being so similar, it's hard to find a reason to recommend the V40. It's a powerful phone that has a lot to offer, but it just can not compete with the incredible Note 9 in many areas.
