The Mac App Store still seems to fight against malicious apps. Security researchers have found applications that collect user data and download it to developers' servers, MalwareBytes reported.
Applications tend to be utility applications and anti-malware applications. The apps collect data about the search history and user browser display, downloaded software, App Store navigation information, and even a list of all running processes. According to MalwareBytes, they also appear to be sent to servers in China, where the storage and protection needs of identifiable information vary from those of the United States and the United Kingdom.
Applications reported to have these issues include Adware Doctor, Open Any Files: RAR Support, Dr. Antivirus, and Dr. Cleaner. Some of these apps also have a number of five-star ratings, which could be wrong.
Adware Doctor has since been deleted due to news from security researchers.
"Unfortunately, the App Store is really not the haven that Apple would like people to believe," says Thomas Reed of MalwareBytes Cable.
