Mac sales drop in Q3 as customers wait for new models

Apple's share of the global personal computer market declined in the third quarter of 2018, while other major manufacturers enjoyed a slow return to growth, according to new firm estimates of ## 147 ## # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # 39, Gartner market research.

According to preliminary estimates shared by Gartner, Apple has delivered 4.9 million Mac units to conquer 7.3% of the market during the three-month period ending in September. Performance fell 8.5% over the previous year, placing the Cupertino technology giant in fourth place among the world's leading PC providers.

Apple was one of two companies to post negative growth in the third quarter, likely due to a shortage of new products. The company released new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro models in July, but has not yet updated its list of popular iMac all-in-one and MacBook products for 2018.

Lenovo and HP maintained their respective first and second places, with an estimated delivery of 15.9 million units during the period, for a 23.6% market share. HP shipped 14.6 million units for a 21.8 percent market share. The two main players saw their market share increase during the quarter. Lenovo gained 10.7% of its performance last year, and HP, 6.2%.

Dell comes in third with 10.7 million units delivered, or 16% of the market, up 5.3% year-on-year.

Apple trailed behind Acer, which was managing 4 million units for 6.1 percent of the market, down 5.7 percent from the same period in 2017.

Gartner's estimates suggest that the broader personal computer market is stabilizing after a contraction of more than six years. For the third quarter, global shipments reached 67.2 million units, up 0.1% from the previous year.

"The PC market has continued to be fueled by the constant demand for enterprise PCs, driven by hardware upgrades to Windows 10 computers. We expect the Windows 10 upgrade cycle to be up and running. will continue until 2020, by which time the demand for upgrade will decrease, "said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. "Although the third quarter is generally showing strong consumer PC sales due to the back-to-school season, consumer PC demand has continued to weaken, offsetting strong business market sales."

The story was similar for the US market, where Apple maintained its position in fourth place despite a decline in sales. The company sold about 2 million units in its home market, down 7.6% year-on-year. HP and Dell again led to the US, although they experienced a 0.8% contraction in the quarter. Lenovo finished third with 15.4% of the US market, up 22.2% over the same period last year, while Microsoft ranked among the top five with a market share of 4.1 %.
