Design
As Apple has made no changes to the design at its top level MacBook line, the exterior is completely unchanged. Inside, however, an updated third-generation keyboard with "butterfly" mechanism keys that, though aesthetically identical to past iterations, is supposed to be quieter.
The clickable click of the 2018 MacBook Pro keyboard is smothered compared to last year's 13-inch base model, which uses second-generation butterfly keys. The feeling of striking remains largely the same, with a good number of keys and a good rebound during the takeoff of the fingers.
It is not known if key design changes include reliability upgrades, and Apple does not talk much about them. The company said the main complaint of the customers was the sound of the keyboard, and not the malfunctions that triggered several class actions. For its part, Apple maintains only a small percentage of users were affected by the key problem.
In any case, it will be necessary to wait and see if the new keyboard is more reliable than the previous versions.
Continuing, our 2018 MacBook Pro comes with a Touch Bar and Touch ID, the latter being convenient for connecting and buying items online with Apple Pay. It also comes with the Apple T2 chip, which basically consolidates some system controllers into one and brings for the first time "Hey Siri" to the new MacBook.
After a quick installation procedure that prompts a user to read a sentence, we tested Hey Siri by asking him a few questions. The performance was similar to iOS, with excellent voice recognition and fast results. Hey Siri will become even more powerful once macOS Mojave will see its release, as the upcoming operating system integrates HomeKit device control via the Home app.
True Tone is another new feature that measures ambient light colors on the screen. The 2018 MacBook Pro is the first Mac to get the feature and it works as advertised. When turned on, the white balance will adjust to make the screen images more natural compared to the laptop environment. Typically, users will notice warmer display colors, although results may vary depending on your lighting configuration.
Performance
This year's 13-inch MacBook Pro is the first to be powered by a quad-core processor. Our benchmark is a basic model using Intel's 8th generation Core i5 processor at 2.3 GHz, with boost speeds of up to 3.8 GHz.
In Geekbench 4, the laptop got a score of 4,602 for the single core and 16,699 for the multi-core, which represents a huge improvement over the models of the year last. For comparison, the 2017 MacBook Pro 13-inch touch barless put in the single and multi-core scores of 4,524 and 9,484, respectively. Perhaps most impressive, the new 13-inch surpasses a high-end 2016 MacBook Pro with Intel Core i7 running at 2.9GHz, which gave scores of 4,360 and 11,979.
On graphics performance, the GPU has been upgraded from an Intel Iris Plus 650 to a 655, and looking at OpenCL test results, there does not seem to be a very big difference between the two built-in chips. By running the same test on our base model of 13 inches in 2017, which has the chip Iris Plus 640, there is some improvement, but honestly not much, with respective scores of 30,983 and 32,831. The score of 48,081 on our 15-inch MacBook Pro 2016, however, was much better than the new 13-inch model
This new quad-core processor is obviously more powerful than previous MacBook Pro processors, so it will attract more power of the battery. Apple has increased the size of the battery by 18% compared to the Touch Bar model of last year.
Using the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, the SSD of the new model, at least 256GB version, writes at 680.8MB / s. at 2245.9 MB / s, roughly the equivalent of the base model from last year.
The speakers are also improved, with precise improvements in bass and volume.
Stay on the lookout
The new Apple MacBook Pro announces as one of the biggest non-design upgrades of its recent memory, but much remains to be done. Stay tuned for a closer look in the coming days, including a look at the new Blackmagic eGPU that Apple has announced alongside the new MacBook Pro.
