Google introduced the Dark Launcher theme on the Pixels 2 and 2 XL, possibly expanding it to the first generation of pixels with the Android 8.1 update. However, there was no way to change the theme manually – it was still based on the bottom of the screen. Google has recently promised a rocker, and now it is here in the latest preview of Android P.

The default setting in DP4 is still to change the launcher's theme when you apply a screen background dark or light. If you do not like this, go to Settings> Display> Advanced> Device theme. You can choose between light, dark and automatic. The device theme setting changes your quick settings, your folders, and your application drawer.

This theme setting is and not the elusive theme of the dark system (AKA night mode). This is still listed in the development options from this version, but we have no idea if it will remain available in the final version. I have every reason to expect the rocker launcher theme to become the final version of Android 9.0, however.
