Twitter users have found that #MarioKart and #Toad were in trend this morning, although no one seems to know why.
Fans of the Mario Kart series and Nintendo in general have met the news with delight. The dreams of new DLCs announced for the venerable kart racing game were however canceled when no press release was found by Nintendo. The same goes for those who hope to have more levels for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, a Wii U game that has recently found new life on the new Big N console, the Switch.
The Mario Kart franchise started in 1992 with Super Mario Kart on Super Nintendo Entertainment System or SNES. The game featured eight playable characters, including Toad, Princess Peach's escort. Toad appeared in all the following Mario Kart games and was joined by Toadette in Mario Kart: Double Dash and Beyond GameCube.
Toad, for his part, made his first appearance in Super Mario Bros. 2 in 1988, where he was one of four playable characters, alongside Mario, Luigi and Princess Toadstool.
The toad should not be confused with the look-alikes that inhabit the entire kingdom of mushrooms. These appeared for the first time in Super Mario Bros., leaving Mario to know that "The Princess is in another castle", saved from the claws of Bowser.
There has been no news today that directly concerns Toad or Mario Kart, but we can only imagine that Nintendo has something big in store. Luigi, Mario's often forgotten older brother, dedicated his own year to him; This is surely Toad's time? Still, the timing would be odd – the Switch received its own Mario Kart game last year, and as mentioned above, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker has been reissued in recent months.
Fans have been able to find a mysterious tweet from @NintendoAmerica, more than three years old, but we do not yet know if this is related.
This story is still developing. When Nintendo deems it appropriate to make a statement, we will update this article accordingly.
